Happy New Year from The Commons Project!

To our partners and friends,

2021 was a year of remarkable challenges as the world struggled to recover and reopen during an ongoing pandemic. Here’s a look at all we accomplished together in 2021 and what's in store for 2022 as we continue to work toward our mission of empowering individuals to access and control their data and put it to use for their benefit.

This year, we are proud to have worked with our VCI partners to convene a global ecosystem around SMART Health Cards, a new standard for sharing verifiable health data, beginning with COVID vaccination records and test results. Globally, over 300 million individuals now have access to SMART Health Card vaccination records. Many U.S. states and countries (including Canada and Japan) have adopted the standard, with more on the way.

SMART Health Cards were adopted by hundreds of health systems, leading pharmacies (CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, Rite Aid), health plans (Cigna, United Healthcare), health IT platforms (Epic, Cerner, Microsoft, Oracle, Salesforce), and the leading mobile platforms, beginning with Apple’s adoption of the standard with the release of iOS 15.  Samsung and Google adopted the standard as well, integrating CommonHealth with the Samsung Pay and Google Pay platforms.

It was also a year of exponential growth for CommonHealth as we onboarded hundreds of new health systems, allowing Android users to access their health data and share it with the partners, apps and services they trust.

To support the global ecosystem of SMART Health Card issuers and verifiers, we launched the CommonTrust Network in April to serve as the foundational trust framework, enabling SMART Health Cards to be verified. Since then, the CommonTrust Network has expanded to include 500+ data sources in 50+ countries, covering over 5,000 testing and vaccination locations.

In July, we launched the free SMART Health Card Verifier App so that any entity can verify a SMART Health Card. The app has been downloaded by over 450,000 people in more than 30 countries. We’ve also launched Verification APIs to integrate health status verification into existing systems and tools, including integrations with ServiceNow’s return-to-work solutions and Salesforce’s Dreampass solution.

We continued to help the world reopen from the pandemic, partnering with Affinidi to build CommonCheck. Evolving from our work on CommonPass, CommonCheck is a new service that enables governments to quickly verify the health credentials of incoming travelers. The service was successfully piloted with the Cayman Islands and is now operating in three countries, with six additional countries launching in the coming months.

What's Coming in 2022

As we kick off 2022, the challenge of COVID-19 continues to evolve. Amid this global health crisis, the need to shift toward digital verifiable records and empower individuals to hold their health data is more urgent than ever. We remain committed to helping the world continue to recover and reopen safely, while modernizing global health data infrastructure to lay the foundation for the future of digital health.

We are looking forward to:

  • Further scaling the network of SMART Health Card issuers and verifiers to increase access to and use of digital verifiable credentials
  • Applying the SMART Health Card standard beyond COVID to include routine immunizations, diagnostics, patient summary information, etc.
  • Facilitating global access to health data platforms, empowering 10 million plus users to hold their own health data
  • Growing the network of CommonHealth data sources and extending CommonHealth to markets beyond the U.S.
  • Helping countries across five continents to safely reopen by leveraging the CommonCheck service

The importance of interoperability has never been clearer, and the opportunity for the future of health data has never been more promising. We look forward to working with you this year to unlock the full potential of technology and data for the common good.

We are grateful to each of you -- our incredible partners, team members and friends  -- for your help in making our 2021 vision a reality, and for your continued support of our mission in 2022.
